This half day course is open to all Health Care Providers (HCPs) who are currently working with clients that require regular vitamin B12 injections. It is a prerequisite that the student has already completed the “core training for immunisations” prior to attending this course.
The course will explore the disease process of Pernicious Anaemia before discussing treatments and on-going management. Discussion will focus on the legal frameworks for injectable medicines and examples will be shared to include a competency framework for completion with an Assessor in practice.
Aims and Objectives
- To provide HCAS with the knowledge and skills required for the procedure of administering B12 injections
- To provide the HCA with resources, education and awareness of the legal issues, accountability and prescribing through delegation
- To provide the mechanisms for the HCA to be signed off as competent by a trained nurse in their workplace and follow the protocols and framework supplied for safe practice

- What is Pernicious anaemia?
- What are the symptoms, causes and treatment of B12 deficiency?
- Monitoring patients with B12 deficiency
- What are the side effects/contraindications/follow up care/ anaphylaxis?
- Injection administration and techniques
- Refresh requirements for HCAs in extended practice
- Protocols/ competencies and supervised practice by mentor
