Undertaking a Holistic Leg Assessment including ABPI and Planning Care

This Event Has Passed
This event has passed and can no longer be booked.

This day focuses on the importance of lower limb assessment, recognising vascular screening and Doppler as an integral part of the holistic assessment. The learner will explore all aspects in relation to recognising and managing types of ulceration and other leg conditions.

Key to the day is the introduction of the National Wound Strategy Programme Lower Limb Recommendations for the leg and foot.

We will explore the concept of compression without a reliable ABPI, early recognition / action, the ‘Red Flags’ and discuss immediate and necessary care.

The day will concentrate on assessment, information gathering and procedures to support care planning and the need for referral.

A ‘Doppler’ practical demonstration / workshop will be included, exploring A.B.P.I. calculation, listening to pulses etc. with discussion for using an automated ABPI machine.

Please bring your surgery Doppler kit and cuff on the day for the practical workshop.

Learning Outcomes

The Practitioner will be able to:

  • Be familiar with the new National guidance and how to manage the change in practice and the importance of ulcer prevention and not just treatment
  • Identify the main characteristics of lower limb circulation, disease/risk factors and to make the link between health, lifestyle to support joint outcomes
  • Understand the relevance of Vascular Screening (Doppler), how to undertake the procedure, consider its reliability in planning care and carry out/calculate the results in conjunction with the assessment
  • Devise an individualised plan of care with and for the patient plus review dates, recognise red flags and to be able to refer/seek advice appropriately
