Removal of Stitches and Staples for Health Care Assistants

This half day workshop is provided for Health Care Assistants in Primary care who are currently removing sutures and staples and feel they would benefit from some theoretical learning and evidence of practice; or it has been identified as a potential new learning need.

The workshop will explore the knowledge and skills needed to risk assess a wound prior to removing sutures or staples. All delegates attending this workshop will receive a competency framework for their portfolios of evidence to be observed by their Assessor and signed off in practice.

Aims and Objectives

  • To gain knowledge on the signs and symptoms of an approximated wound
  • To appreciate the principles of Infection control and Asepsis when removing staples and sutures
  • Increased awareness and knowledge of how to recognise deterioration in a wound and when to refer
  • To discuss the challenges of suture techniques and complex wound care and how to manage cases
  • To have a competency framework that provides evidence of learning to meet the requirements of patient safety and CQC.
