This one-day course is suitable for new to practice Health Care Professionals (HCPs) and experienced Health Care Assistants (HCAs) and will provide all of the necessary resources and tools needed to deliver seasonal influenza immunisations. The session will be a full day interactive training course.

A prerequisite for HCA attendance is a minimum of two years’ experience of general practice and evidence of learning, with an NVQ 3 or equivalent.

Delegates will receive a comprehensive workbook and competencies to be signed off by an assessor in practice. The clinician will require a period of supervised practice and review of practice annually including annual CPR and anaphylaxis updates.

Course Content

  • What is flu - how the immune system works, epidemics and pandemics
  • Undertaking a risk assessment of the patient prior to immunisation
  • Consent and documentation
  • Legal implications of advanced practice
  • knowledge of NMC guides to medicine management and patient specific directives
  • This seasons flu campaign, including an overview of recent changes to the programme
  • Safe handling and storage of vaccination including infection control
  • Practical demonstration to include consultation and procedure

Upon completion of the course and workbook learning, outcomes will include:

  • An awareness of the roles and responsibility associated with administration of the influenza vaccination.
  • Theoretical knowledge and practical skills to administer the seasonal influenza vaccination with the support of a Protocol and Patient Specific Directive.
