Julia O'Mara RGN BSc
Julia qualified in 1989, and has experience in many fields of nursing and teaching. She is an independent nurse prescriber.
Her early experience as a Parkinson’s Disease Specialist Nurse involved teaching, research and presenting at conferences across the UK in the early 1990s. She developed her interest in Primary Care while implementing care management programmes for Parkinson’s disease in General Practice.
With 18 years experience in Primary Care and nurse management, Julia has developed skills in practicing nursing, long term conditions, advanced practice in assessment and diagnosis of minor illness with independent prescribing.
Julia has been Modern Matron for Primary Care and General Practice for Solent Healthcare (formerly Portsmouth City Teaching PCT) for the past 6 years and, within this role, champion’s quality and governance for General Practice. Julia has been instrumental in sourcing and providing education for nurses, and healthcare support workers, including organising and facilitating regular conferences for continued professional development.
Julia has written several clinical guidelines, protocols and policies for the organisation as well as chairing the Professional Practice Nurse Forum and co-chairing the Non-Medical Prescriber’s Forum.
Julia has had several publications in nursing journals and won awards for project work.
